   BMW has released the first official photos and information on the all-new 3 Series Coupe.

The new design is arguably the tidiest overall form in BMW’s current lineup, especially aft of the C-pillar in the trunk/rear decklid section, and strong character lines carried over from the 3 Series four-door give the coupe a sporty look that’s also very elegant. New design elements inside the cabin include stylish metallic trim and special interior lighting.

Two all-new engine choices will be available with the new 3: the 230-bhp 328i Coupe, a U.S. market exclusive, and the 300-bhp/300-lb.-ft. of torque 335i Coupe, the latter utilizing a radically new (for the 3 Series) twin-turbo architecture. A welcome benefit of this powerplant to enthusiast drivers is that peak torque is maintained from a very low 1400 rpm all the way up to 5000 rpm. The traditional inline-6 format continues, forming the building block of both new models and helping to explain the long hood. The standard gearbox will be a 6-speed manual with a 6-speed Steptronic automatic transmission available as an option.

BMW claims a 0-60-mph time of only 5.3 seconds for the new 335i, with the entry level 328i scoring a 6.2-second run. The traditional rear-wheel-drive setup along with a near 50/50 weight balance should greatly aid the handling cause. BMW’s active steering is an available option.

Another available option is BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system, the first time it has been offered on a 3 Series two-door, as equipped on the 328xi Coupe.

Among the interesting new standard items exclusively for the U.S. market car are the very welcome adaptive xenon headlights and a handy if somewhat odd automatic seatbelt feed, a small arm attached to each of the front occupant’s seatbelts that extends the belt forward for more convenient access.

Arriving on dealer floors this September, 
the all-new BMW 3 Series Coupe is sure to be a hit.
